In shingles,does the skin peel like it would if you were sunbrned? my 91 yr old mother has this condition?

and her back and left resemble a road map,the blisters she had burst and shes a peeling mess! its not pretty to look at either.our aide is applying liberally calamine lotion,ive heard not to put anything on the blistery rash,i think shes doing my mom wrong by putting all sorts of creams on her back and left .
